In imitation of his Savior, St. Martin rode not on a horse but on an ass.
"And horses that came against him were afraid of him in suchwise that they who rode on them fell down to Earth.
And they took Martin and beat him griveiously and he saying nothing suffered gladly the strokes, nor was not moved angry with them.
And then they returned to their horses whom they found... fast to the ground, and they might no more move them than a rock until they had
returned to St. Martin and confessed their tresspasses that they had done so by ignorance, and prayed to him to pardon them
and to give them license to depart. And so he did and then the beasts arose and went their way a good pace."
The artist who created this artwork for St. Martin's signed it BAMorano.
