St. Martin and the Priest at the Banquet with Maximus

St. Martin and the Priest at the Banquet with Maximus... Click image for greater resolution St. Martin refused to dine with Maximus saying boldly that he could not eat at the same table with the man who deprived one emporer of his dominions and another of his life. St. Martin at length was prevailed upon to accept the invitation. Maximus gave a great feast. Martin was accompanied by a priest who was also seated at a place of honor. An officer presented the cup to Maximus who ordered it to be given to St. Martin giving him the honor of the first drink. Voraigne records that "St. Martin was of such great humilty" that he passed the cup first to his priest instead of to the emporer, "for he knew well that there was none worthy to drink before the priest, as the most worthy person in the company." His action was applauded by the emporer and the whole court.

The artist who created this artwork for St. Martin's signed it BAMorano.
