St. Martin Being Accused of Cowardice... Click image for greater resolution Shortly thereafter the Germans invaded Gaul (now France). Martin, having decided to resign from the military and refused the donative for the battle that was to follow. He was accused of being a coward. With surprising intrepidity, Martin offerred to be placed in the front line without arms, saying, "In the name of the Lord Jesus, and protected not by a helmet and a butler, but by the sign of the cross, I will thrust myself into the thickest squadrons of the enemy without fear." That night the barbarians asked for terms of peace. Martin procured leave to retire having served in the military for five years.
