An imperial order was issued to oblige the sons of veterans officers to bear arms.
At fifteen Martin was compelled to take the military oath and was entered in the calvary.
His virtue, goodness and charity gained him the love and esteem of all his companions.
He was not yet baptized. One day in the midst of a severe winter, entering the city of Amiens, a poor man,
almost naked, shaking with cold was begging alms of those who passed by.
Martin, seeing those that went before him took no notice of the poor man, drew his sword and cut his
cloak in two pieces, giving one to the poor man. Those watching laughed.
The artist who created this artwork for St. Martin's signed it BAMorano.
