St. Peregrine

Pedastal Supporting the Statue of St. PeregrineTower of Babel The St. Peregrine shrine is located in rear of the church. The pedestal for the shrine is the canopy from the raredos of the old high altar.

Every Tuesday after morning Mass, the Novena to St. Pergrine is recited and the roll call of names of those suffering with incurable illnesses is read aloud seeking the intercession of St. Pergrine.

Peregrine labored for years as a brother in the Servite Order and at age 60 was diagnosed with cancer of the leg brought on by many years of disciplined prayer while standing, resulting in varicose veins, which became ulcerous. On the night before the scheduled amputation of his leg, Peregrine dragged himself to the foot of the cross in the community chapter room and fell into a deep trance-like sleep. Upon waking, he discovered that this leg was completely cured.

The Conversion of St. Peregrine

Saint Peregrine Laziosi is the patron of those who have cancer and HIV/AIDS. He was born in Forli, Italy in the year 1260. As a young man he was part of a party that opposed the pope. He met up with St. Philip Benizi, the head of the Servite order, who had been sent to try to bring together the divided community. While he tried to preach St. Philip Benizi was harassed and even hit on the cheek by Peregrine, who was very enthusiastic about his cause. That event changed Peregrine. He was deeply touched when Saint Philip offered him the other cheek. He began to devote the time and energy he had been using to divide and became Catholic. He did many good works and eventually joined the Servites order. He studied and was ordained a priest. When he went back to his hometown, he founded a new Servite house there and became well known for his preaching and holiness. He was very devoted to the sick and those living in poverty.

A Prayer to St. Peregrine for Sick Relatives and Friends

O great St. Peregrine,
you have been called
"The Mighty", the "The Wonder Worker"
because of the numerous miracles
which you obtained from God for those
who have turned to you in their need.
For so many years you bore in your own flesh
this cancerous disease that destroys the
very fiber of our being.
You turned to God when the power
of human beings could do no more,
and you were favored with the vision of
Jesus coming down from His cross
to heal your affliction.
I now ask God to heal these sick persons
whom I entrust to you:
(Here mention their names)
Aided by your powerful intercession,
I shall sing with Mary a hymn of gratitude
to God for His great goodness and mercy.
Amen.
